Von den drei Affen

Brandenburg, 2025

Oranienburg: Memorial at the site of the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp. First votes AfD: 34.6% Second votes AfD: 32.6%

Early elections are held in Germany on 23 February 2025. The clear winner is the AfD, which becomes the second strongest party. In many constituencies – especially in eastern Germany – it even holds the top position. There are communities around my home in Berlin where every third or second adult voted for this right-wing nationalist party.

Whenever I travel to the surrounding area for professional or private reasons, I want to see what Wikipedia says is worth seeing in the respective places. Because it’s not just old churches, picturesque castles or other flagships of so-called German tradition that fill the ethnic nationalists of the AfD with pride. Almost everywhere you look, you are reminded of historical facts that happened not so long ago. But many Germans no longer want to see these parts of German history. And they don’t want to hear about it either. They prefer to talk about something else.
