Tourism in Greece is booming like never before. For some, Santorini or Mykonos are dream destinations. Others find peace on the small, lesser-known islands. Yet even on these islands, tourism is both a curse and a blessing. There is too much rubbish, recycling is virtually non-existent, and despite the wind and constant sunshine, the islands remain dependent on fossil fuels. Bureaucracy and ingrained habits are blocking the transition. Thanks to wind power, solar panels and battery storage, Tilos is energy self-sufficient: It is the world’s first certified zero-waste island. The local authorities and residents are pulling in the same direction, and everyone benefits as a result. Tilos could serve as a blueprint for the future of all islands.
